 Where is Awarradam situated?

Awarradam is about 225 km away from Paramaribo. Located in the Gran Rio river that meets the Piking Rio 30 km downstream to form the Boven Suriname river. This river flows into the Brokopondo Reservoir.

 Information

We will fly across the Suriname River, Paranam, the airport, the reservoir /Brownsberg. Following the route, we will see Atjoni at the end of the road. Afterwards we will see the villages Laduani, Botopasi and Dyumu. Our destination airport is Kayana. There we will take the boat which will take us to the Awarradam Island in about 50 minutes.You will be allocated your accommodation for the coming nights. All lodges feature river views, single beds with mosquito net, shower and toilet. There is a ‘restaurant’ which will serve your meals 3 times a day, a bar and recreation area. The staff is Saramaccaans and lives partly on the island and partly in Sindofitti

What does our tour look like?

Day 1, after arrival, we will visit the beautiful “Peti” rapid a few minutes away from the resort. Here you can enjoy a refreshing water massage and drive back to the resort or paddle back with the canoe. On the first evening you will get more information about this unique area and the Marroons ancient West African traditions.

Day 2. After breakfast, you will have an educational and adventurous ‘jungle walk’. As you feast your eyes in the virgin tropical rainforest, the guide will tell you about about the trees and plants and how you can recognize animals by their sounds and traces. After lunch you will visit the rapid ‘Peti’ where we will stay all afternoon, swim, paddle in a canoe and enjoy the beautiful view of the rapids while lying in a hammock. In the evening after dinner, you will get more information on some fascinating aspects of local culture.

Day 3

Shortly after breakfast we will sail upstream. After about half an hour, the engines of the canoe will be turned off so we can float back with the river’s stream and enjoy the jungle sounds and fauna to the fullest. We will return to the resort through a forest path that lies on primary rainforest so you can experience the true jungle feeling. Lunch will be served at the resort.

In the afternoon you will visit the local community and learn more about the local culture. During the cruise, half an hour downstream, you will be educated on the river that is the lifeline for the local community. On the way you will see people fishing, doing the washing and the dishes. Between the inhabited areas you can enjoy nature and with some luck you might even see a cayman lying on the shore. From the pier on you will make an extensive walk along different villages. On the way you will get a good impression of the daily life in a marroon village. The dinner wil be served in Kajana, after which you will be treated to a cultural dance and singing performance in one of the villages. The guide will explains the texts and the dancers will certainly invite you to join.

Under a tropical starry sky, our boatmen will bring you back to Awarradam. You will be amazed by their sailing!

Day 4

Early in the morning you can paddle in a canoe, swim or just enjoy the sounds of the jungle. You can also participate in an early cruise, without the sound of the outboard engine and just enjoy the awakening of the jungle to the fullest. After breakfast the employees will say goodbye to you in a traditional way. You will return to Kajana by canoe. From there on, you fly back to Paramaribo.

Day 4

You can spend this day to your liking. If you take a stroll in the forest before breakfast, you will most likely encounter animals such as monkeys, birds and tropical frogs. You can also visit a farm or explore the area in a canoe. Perhaps you would like to hear from the guide about the medicinal plants in the tropical rainforest. And then your hammock will lure you into enjoying the beauty and the sounds of the jungle peacefully, to read or to doze off for a moment.

Day 5
