Expectation of the tour?
You can cycle from the Grote Combeweg to Leonsberg where you cross over to Nieuw Amsterdam with the boat (tent boat). Fort Nieuw Amsterdam was built in order to defend strongly after the French in 1712 did a successful invasion. Today it is an open air museum where you will see old cannon, coaches, gunpowder houses. You can cycle through a former plantation area that is inhabited by descendants of former employees of Marienburg sugar factory.
Marienburg is an old sugar plantation where the abandoned sugar factory still stands. An old worker on the spot can tell you more about that piece of history. Once again you’lle cross the river with a boat to plantation Johanna Margaretha.
A delicious Surinamese lunch is served by the family Dipai, who lives and works in the plantation. Then you would go sailing in a “Lo-Lo boto” (that are narrow boats 3-5 perons per boat). One of the highlights in the beginning of this wetland excursion is to go up rapidly across the drag slope in addition to drag the boat to the other side of the swamp.
In the marsh you have big chance to spot birds such as the Red Ibis, snipers, herons and Osprey. After the 1 hour boat trip you will be dropped off at the family Dipai and you cycle further to plantation Marienbosch. In the evening you will have your simple evening meal in the colonial home.
